Why You’ll Love These Heart Shaped Danishes
If you're looking for a fun, delicious, and actually pretty Valentine’s recipe, these pastries check all the boxes. The cream cheese filling gets its soft pink hue from beetroot powder made from leftover juice pulp, so there’s no food dye or artificial ingredients. And the heart shape? Absolutely adorable but truly so easy to do. Use store-bought puff pastry for speed or go from-scratch if you’re feeling ambitious. Either way, these bake up with flaky layers, a creamy center, and just the right amount of sweetness.

Instructions
Prepare Pastry Dough
Using thawed puff pastry, cut heart shapes with a cookie dough cutter. I cut mine from aluminum, But I would totally recommend buying a set if you bake a lot - look how cheap they are! Using a smaller heart shape, slightly press a smaller heart of your cut out without piercing all the way through. This is more like a perforation and will allow the edges to puff up. Cover loosely and place in the fridge to remain cool while preparing the filling.

Make Cream Cheese Filling
Working with room temperature cream cheese, add to a mixing bowl and beat until smooth. Add the powdered sugar, salt and vanilla and continue mixing until fully incorporated.
Make it Pink
Now this step is totally optional. You can absolutely make heart shaped cheese danishes with out making them pink. That being said, I'm what they would call EXTRA. So I add beetroot powder to mine! Beetroot powder acts as an all natural food dye and an extra sneaky way to get some additional vitamins in your treat! Learn to make it or buying pre-made is just as good!

Pipe the Frosting Like a Pro
For a professional look, add each version of cream cheese frosting to their own plastic zipper bag. Cut roughly 1/4" of the corners off. Then place both bags into one. Cut that corner off. When you squeeze your one piping bag, it will come out with a very cool omber effect combining your white cream cheese and pink! Be mindful not to overfill the heart shapes with cream cheese frosting or they will overflow while baking in the oven

Eggwash + Bake
Apply an egg wash to any exposed puff pastry including areas you missed with frosting and the crust. Bake at 375°F for 15 minutes until puffy and golden.

Variations of Heart Shape Danishes
There are so many ways to flavor a cheese danish! Here are some of my favorites:
Cherry - add a dollop of cherry pie filling into the center and bake as normal
Chocolate - mix in 1/4 cup melted chocolate chips to the cream cheese filling
Strawberry - top the cream cheese with freshly cut strawberries
