Recipe Rundown
Taste | Smooth, creamy and slightly tart filling perfectly wrapped in a buttery flaky crust - what else does a dessert need ?! |
Texture | Phyllo dough provides this Cream Cheese Turnover with all these layers of buttery flaky crust that everyone will love to bite into! |
Fillings | Try using jams or fresh berries inside each pocket with the cream cheese to make this treat truly your own! Strawberry preserves is a popular addition! |
Phyllo Dough | Phyllo dough is found in the freezer section in grocery stores. If you accidentally grabbed puff pastry dough, try Cheese Danish instead! |

Have you ever set out to bake something new, set all your ingredients out to thaw or soften, even pre-heated the oven, only to realize you totally got the wrong ingredient when it?! That was 100% me and how THIS Cream Cheese Turnover recipe came into my life. Considering how flaky these are, I might even prefer them over its cousin (and what I originally set out to bake), the Cheese Danish!
What is Phyllo Dough?
Let me tell you how SHOCKED I was to discover phyllo dough and puff pastry dough were two different things. Phyllo dough, shown in the images above, are very thin, delicate sheets of dough. When layered together, they provide an easy way to add layers of crunch into a dish like the sweet dessert Cream Cheese Turnover (recipe below). I've also seen them used in savory dishes too like this Greek Spinach Pie, called Spanakopita. We're chef-ing up our own version soon so be sure to subscribe to be notified when the recipe is available!
Instructions
Begin by removing your phyllo dough from the packaging and set out to thaw. The sheets are very thin, so they will thaw quickly, 10-15 minutes. Now is a good time to pre-heat the oven to 375° F. In a small bowl, combine 1 brick of cream cheese, 1 tsp vanilla extract, and 1/3 cup of sugar.

Using 4 sheets at a time, cut the phyllo dough in half the long way. Add your cream cheese mixture to the bottom corner of each long strip and then fold them up like a paper football (do kids still make those ?!) In short, take the bottom corner and fold it up diagonally creating a right triangle. Keep folding up, maintaining the triangle shape. Check out the video posted below to see the folding method!

Lastly, add your egg wash on top and getting all the sides and the seam. Not only will this help seal all that cream cheesy goodness inside, but will also create a beautiful golden color. Bake for 12-15 minutes. There done when the top is golden! Stay nearby to time it just right before that cream cheese spills out😂. Once cooled, adding a simple sugar glaze on top is the chef's kiss - perfection!
